NHC tracking three tropical waves and disturbance in eastern Atlantic


According to NOAA, the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be a near-normal season, with a 40% chance of a near-normal season, a 30% chance of an above-normal season and a 30% chance of a below-normal season. NOAA is forecasting a range of 12 to 17 total named storms, of which 5 to 9 could become hurricanes, including 1 to 4 major hurricanes

For the next 5 days, NOAA’s National Hurricane Center is tracking a disturbance in the far eastern Atlantic and three tropical waves, including one in the Caribbean

The disturbance has a low chance (10%) of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours or 5 days. The tropical wave in the Caribbean has a medium chance (40%) of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours or 5 days. The other two tropical waves have low chances (10% and 20%) of developing into tropical cyclones in the next 48 hours or 5 days.


Tropical waves are bands of low pressure that move from east to west across the tropical Atlantic, and can sometimes lead to the formation of tropical cyclones nes They can also bring flooding rains and gusty winds to the Caribbean islands and Central America.

Tropical wave near Haiti

The tropical wave in the Caribbean that has the highest chance of developing into a tropical cyclone is located near Haiti and is moving west at 17 mph It is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Hispaniola, Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands over the next few day. It is currently about 500 miles east of the easternmost Caribbean islands

The other two tropical waves in the Caribbean are located west-northwest of Cape Verde and south of 16N into western Colombia, respectively

They are moving west at 9 mph and 10 mph, respectively. They have low chances of developing into tropical cyclones in the next 48 hours or 5 days They are producing some scattered showers and thunderstorms along their paths
