Tropical Storm Fiona

The 6th-named storm of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Tropical Storm Fiona, formerly Tropical Depression Number 7, formed in the tropical Atlantic on Wed Sep 14 2022, located near latitude 16.6 North, longitude 49.6 West, has begun to bear down on portions of the Leeward islands, according to the 500 PM AST, Fri Sep 16, 2022, Tropical Storm Fiona Advisory Number 10 issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami Florida.

According to the NHC ‘Fiona’ is located 20 MI…35 KM ENE of Guadeloupe or 260 MI…420 KM ESE of St, Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Maximum sustained winds at 5pm are 50 MPH…85 KM/H and the system is moving West or 280 degrees at 15 MPH or 24 KM/H. The minimum central pressure is 1004 MB…29.65 inches.

WATCHES AND WARNINGS

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

* Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, and Anguilla

* Saba and St. Eustatius

* St. Maarten

* Guadeloupe, St. Barthelemy, and St. Martin

* Puerto Rico, including Vieques and Culebra

* U.S. Virgin Islands

* British Virgin Islands

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for:

* Dominica

* South coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano westward to Barahona

* North coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano westward to Cabo Frances Viejo

The National Hurricane Center says “Tropical storm conditions are beginning across portions of the Leeward Islands within the warning area and will continue through Saturday. Tropical storm conditions will spread westward to the U.S. and British Virgin Islands Saturday morning, and across Puerto Rico Saturday afternoon and Saturday night.”

The latest bulletin added that, “Tropical storm conditions are possible on Dominica this evening or tonight and across the watch area in the Dominican Republic beginning Sunday afternoon.”

Meantime, Dominica’s Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit posting on his official Facebook page early Friday afternoon said, “During this period, I urge everyone to be vigilant and safe as we closely monitor the situation. Please remain connected to local media for updates.”
